The Global Pulse Oximetry Gap: Make It Zero!

Today the global pulse oximetry gap stands at more than 77,000 operating rooms worldwide. But together, we can close it: we can Make It Zero. Lifebox is launching a two-year campaign to raise $1.25 million and put 5000 pulse oximeters into the hands of anaesthesia providers in low-resource countries across Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.

We’re very grateful for the support of the Boston Lifebox Challenge, which has already raised enough funds to put a dent in the gap. But if we want to ensure that no operation takes place without the essential monitoring that every patient deserves, we have a long way to go.

We’re launching the Make It Zero campaign at the World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in Buenos Aires at the end of March. If anyone taking part in the Challenge is attending, please do let us know, at info@lifebox.org!

The photo above shows a supporter of the Make it Zero campaign — Lord Ribeiro, a leading figure in international surgery who is from Ghana.

Lifebox Challenge Fact of the Day

Each pulse oximeter distributed costs $250, and includes a 5% administrative fee.  All individual donations are used solely for the distribution of pulse oximeters.  So you can rest assured that your donation (of any amount) will contribute to the production and delivery of a durable and reliable pulse oximeter.

DONORS - PLEASE SPECIFY the institution you are donating on behalf of in the “Comments” or “Tribute” section.  ie, “MGH”, “BWH”, “BIDMC.”  We will track how much each institution raises. Thank you for your support!

Congratulations to BIDMC’s breakfast in support of Lifebox!  Organizers raised $2000, thanks to generous donations from the operating room staff, anesthesia attendings, and residents.  THANK YOU!!
